one other thing. I originally disliked how linear FFVII felt (dungeons are basically, walk in a straight line, fight enemy, open chest, walk in another straight line), something likely brought about by PS1 limitations. FFVIIR so far is exactly the same. I hope it opens up later.

They do a good job developing them, especially Barrett. I haven't played the original and felt the same at the start.

hopefully Aerith shakes out for you better later, which i thought, but you're right in that the game operates from the jump that you probably already love these characters. i can't in good conscious recommend this over the original when it comes to intro to the world

I have already played approx the amount of story this game contains from the original but quit cuz I just didn't enjoy it. I remember thinking Aerith was silly when I first met her, so falling into her flowers later was sort of an "oh, you're like, a hopeful person" moment

Wasn't her introduction in the original something like, "Hey, Cloud, if you work for me, I'll date you"? I don't remember any more character development after that. Then you're supposed to cry. What a garbage game.
