why is Kronk from Emperor's New Groove guarding this fence
all right, actual thoughts: when I first played FFVII, freshman year of college or so, I disliked it for many reasons. one of those reasons, the fact that controlling characters n 3D space in PS1 era had not aged well, has obviously been fixed
another reason was that back then, I was a person with some badly-defined personal politics who struggled to ID with Avalanche's goals. that's no longer the case. as a result, I'm enjoying the overall plot and worldbuilding of FFVIIR far, far more than I expected.
I think the writing for the NPCs and the way they have their conversations normally as you pass through crowds really does *wonders* for that. FFVIIR wants me to care about the wellbeing of humans collectively and that touch is really, really helping it succeed
that said, my very hot take is that I just do not like hardly any of the main cast. Barret feels like a caricature. Wedge is a big dude who constantly talks about eating -- ha ha! what a funny joke! the big guy is always hungry, haha! ugh. Cloud is insufferable.
I respect the love for...what did we land on? Aeris? Aerith? But I feel like the game anticipates nostalgic players caring a lot about her and DEMANDS from the get-go that I care about her DEEPLY without giving me much reason to from the first encounter.
one other thing. I originally disliked how linear FFVII felt (dungeons are basically, walk in a straight line, fight enemy, open chest, walk in another straight line), something likely brought about by PS1 limitations. FFVIIR so far is exactly the same. I hope it opens up later.
anyway, I have settled broadly on "this is fine!" and will keep playing it. since I'm not streaming anywhere and won't be writing a review, I will take this tweet to say: thank you to Square Enix and Butterfinger (the candy) for sending me a code.
