Not the world's biggest problem, but something I wanted to address anyway: We recently made it official Kotaku policy to compensate staff who play games after-hours on deadline (usually for reviews) with time off. because it would usually involve criticizing outlets you either currently or have worked for, effectively burning bridges in a small, small industry

Of course. But the people who would be doing the writing would be the ones standing to lose by doing the writing. You can't keep the source anonymous when the source is yourself. And when this is your livelihood in a tenuous industry with few jobs...
