There's no way to wrap this up neatly, please continue sharing stories if you have them, or mute this if you must, but here are some takeaways from the questions/concerns/thoughts I've seen pop up today:

This isn't really a problem pinned easily on one person/group. It'd be great to get codes earlier. It would also be great if the media landscape wasn't a nightmare and having reviews up on time wasn't a necessity for so many publications to keep going.

I don't know how to solve it, though one good place to start is: pay people for ALL the time they put into reviews, not just the words themselves. Esp freelancers. ESPECIALLY FREELANCERS.

A note here too that, as with so many problems, the people disproportionately affected by issues of pay/crunch in journalism are marginalized folks, who then tend to disproportionately get pushed out of the industry when conditions are shit.

I think a lot of criticism in this industry is quite good, actually, and I do read a lot of it. I think it would broadly be better across the board, and represent a more diverse range of voices, if people had time to write reviews/were paid for the work they put into them.

Finally, to the very very small amount of folks in my mentions who opted to take a shit on me today for complaining because I get to play games for a living (as if that was remotely an accurate description of what any of us does), kindly go kick rocks! Thank you

Oh, one last note: I want to distinguish between "don't brag about this" and "you are at fault for this." I know you have to get paid! Do what you have to do to survive. Make things better where you can. If you're in a position of power, do right by those with less power.

agh, this issue has too much nuance and it's mostly a symptom of like 20 other industry issues and none of them fit into 240 tweets. you're all doing great work and I hope we can all make things better for the folks that come after us.

Feels like a societal problem instead of an industry one. I've out in plenty of 12 hour days for projects, proposals, deadlines and I work for a Land Surveying firm. That's the nature of business. The solution is to find a proper work life balance in the meantime.
