The most baffling part of this is that Xbox went through this in 2010 (!) when Stephen Toulouse (a man sorely missed) led the charge to eliminate Microsoft's own "don't ask, don't tell" policy. It's nearly a decade later and Blizzard is FAR behind the times.

If I had to guess, having worked in the player behavior space before, this was probably done at the customer support level and not at the administrative level, especially if you had the name for a bit and subsequently had it removed.

not defending their other recent shenanigans, but gosh I've dealt with this exact problem too many times, especially reversing name changes support agents did at Riot when someone would report them
