I haven't had a situation so far in my career where I had to make a clear-cut decision of "ask a hard question and potentially lose access" or "ask softball questions and keep access." Usually things are WAY more nuanced than that.https://twitter.com/JBergeron94/status/1148384666950492160 …

Most of the time, if I ask a "hard" question, one of two things will happen: either I'll get a simple "We can't talk about that" or I'll get...some kind of answer. A lot of times those answers are sort of dodgy or fluffy.

Deciding what to do with those answers is really tricky though. I'm still new to this and I still get nervous about pushing, and also sometimes it isn't worth it to push, depending on what the question is and the job of the person I'm talking to. But sometimes it's important to!

And then you just have to be brave and go for it. If it matters and you're talking to the right person to answer the question, I think it's important to ask and push even if it might rub them the wrong way.

But, also like, 95% or so of what I do is writing on stuff that doesn't require this. Being good at asking tough and important questions takes practice. There are some amazing journos in gaming who are great at it. I hope to get better at it with time.

You get better at things by practicing them. That's why I have EMAIL THEM AND ASK in big red letters on my wall. You don't get answers and you don't get better at asking fr them unless you try a lot over and over, and probably fail a lot in the process.
