Agree with Kat, and would add that there's value in coverage from angles of inexperience. If a skilled reviewer of strategy titles loves a strategy game, that tells me nothing. If someone newer to the genre loves a strategy game and finds it accessible, I might look into it.https://twitter.com/The_Katbot/status/1114220530679214081 …

On the other hand, a genre novice’s review likely has no method of comparison, no awareness of desired features, and potentially no appreciation for what genre evolutions and innovations the game represents, all of which is valuable content for the veteran reader.

If I want to know if a horror movie is “good” I want to hear from someone who knows the history of horror movies. Does the movie do anything different? Break any ground? The expert can appreciate and analyze artistry that a novice cannot.

Right. Which is why my argument is the industry needs *both* kinds of reviews, and the best way to approach reviews isn't to take scores at face value but to find reviewers whose tastes and experiences are similar to yours and read their thoughts.

It sounded like we were talking about a single review at a single outlet. If it’s a consumer-facing outlet that will only publish a single review and no additional criticism, I think a genre veteran’s expertise trumps all.

Fair, I was definitely referring more to the industry as a whole, but I still think I broadly disagree with this. Different outlets have different focuses, and I think as long as the reviewer discloses the angle of their approach, it's neat to see other views.

I think this jives a bit better with my general feeling though which is that game reviews are all too similar in general and I wish every dang review didn't go through the same formula of story, controls, gameplay, visuals, one paragraph about what was bad, then a score.

I can’t say I’ve read a pure-checkbox review (story, graphics, audio, gameplay, etc.) in a while. I guess I don’t read those outlets. I do read (and write) genre- or franchise-expert reviews because that’s the audience I am part of/want to serve.

Last I'll say: There are definitely genres where it is more important for reviewers to have a certain level of expertise. I don't think that's the universally most important factor to be considered in how reviews are assigned, and I love when I see new approaches. That's all.
