Was not thrilled by this first tweet, but Stephen's follow-ups in the thread offer helpful context that I think turns this into excellent advice.https://twitter.com/stephentotilo/status/1113173643583008773 …

Above my desk is a big white piece of paper that I've written on in big red letters "EMAIL THEM AND ASK." That advice is what my editor has been trying to pound into my head for months now, and it's applicable to about 90% of the questions I've had about my job since I started.

Not everyone, or even most everyone, will respond right away. But some will, especially if you ask interesting questions that add context to what's already been said. Do this often enough, and you'll broaden the pool of people who will respond.

Anyway that's my two cents as someone still relatively new to all this.

Sorry, one more thing: I think what soured people on that first tweet was that it came from the outlet that has broken the biggest stories the last few years. But huge stories aren't even most of what constitutes "reporting," but are the culmination of *years* of doing it well.

Honestly, his point is fine, but it is initially presented poorly and the context flavours it exactly how you describe it: that he's specifically talking about stories like Schrier's. To give out this advice on any other day might not have attracted the same response.

That's an entirely fair rebuttal.
