One of the stranger themes that emerged in a few of the GDC talks I attended was the notion that “the press is dead.” I wholeheartedly believe there is a place for both content creators and traditional journalists/critics.

The theme I picked up on was more about the value of traditional reviews in selling games, not the inherent value of the wider written press. An important distinction.

Maybe I’m cynical, but a segment of the industry only ever saw enthusiast press as a sales tool rather than a vital part of keeping the industry honest.

But can they 'keep the industry honest' if 99% of the time only 15-20% of the games and companies get covered? I get the why (mostly), but hard to have honest 2-way conversation when it feels like you're yelling into a void. (FWIW I don't want traditional press to die)

I think it’s important that we identify the distinction between critics and journalists (collectively making up “the press”), first. Journalists are the ones holding companies accountable for actions and covering important stories outside of game content...

Critics are previewing and reviewing games. Journalists are telling the stories of the developers making the game as a look into the business and process. Critics tell those stories through the lens of how they impact content

Collectively, there is still not enough bandwidth, time, or funding to cover every game. And, I also don’t think that any game dev (let alone *every* game dev) has a right to expect coverage. So many ignore PR and marketing as an “unnecessary cost.”

And even with great PR and marketing, the game or the story behind it still might not be interesting to the writers, a fit for the audience, or presented in a way that explains why it’s important.

That’s why I believe there is a place for both the press and content creators, but to shut the door on one or the other seems shortsighted in 2019.
