If I can give some constructive criticism: interesting but way too much voice given to BL/Quinlan's pathetic, hollow excuses. As a lawyer who has chased many a deadbeat company, just call it what it is: BL CHOSE to ignore its problems, make LR chase, break a contract & no remorse

Just reporting what both sides say comes across as bothsiderish. One party worked to come to a deal, sued, pursued other options, respected its customers, and sunk irrecoverable funds into the release. The other basically blames everyone else but themselves. Bank error? Please.

I can see what you're saying, for sure. In a piece like this, editorializing is exceptionally tricky. There are a multiple schools of thought, and one is "Let someone hang themselves by their own statements." I think BL/Quinlan did just that.

Another angle for a piece like this is to report on public statements and then gather expert perspective. That would create a larger slant and build a case against one party or the other.

I can't speak to http://GI.biz 's editorial voice or process regarding reporting a story like this, but I think there is a lot of value in a reporter removing themselves from a piece and letting the merits of the arguments speak for themselves.

I don't believe this piece legitimizes BL/Quinlan at all. Rather, my read was that it shows that LR did everything right and Quinlan was clearly trying to pull one over on LR.

AND... I see how you came to feel how you do. It's something I'll keep in mind in my own reporting.

Oh for sure, I can appreciate that the angle here was definitely to give them both rope, but the advocate in me just wanted to see someone call them out for being assholes. So, I guess that's me haha! They came across terribly! I feel pretty bad for LR.

I stand by the way this was reported, especially given that it's a business/legal dispute and not, like, Nazis or something. There are definitely times to lean heavily on a side and I imagine other sites with different tones and approaches will do so - which is perfectly valid.

but thanks also for the insight. It's a tough balance, and I'm still learning, so appreciate the feedback.

I hope my reply did not come off as anything other than my opinion. I'm not a journalist, I'm but one of your audience. The article was very well written and certainly presented the story, and we almost NEVER see this type of inside baseball in disputes other than court filings.
