fun fact, if I hadn't gotten pissed at academia my doctoral studies would probably have been directed at either revolutionary cinema, post-war/early cold-war cinema, or cinema of the wild west (and its relation to noir) because i studied lots of it and it's fascinating stuff

this is a great way of putting it! way too many games want you to live out The Fantasy Of Being The Great Man of History and I would rather see more games about Human Relationships In Times of Strugglehttps://twitter.com/profoundcarnage/status/1096476110529986560 …

the "and gaming!" guy in the sakura-con 2009 ad 💽 @profoundcarnageW odpowiedzi do @docsquiddynarrative fiction and particularly games (where individual agency tends to be overvalued) are really susceptible to Great Man of History theory. its just easier and arguably more compelling that way even if inaccurate1 odpowiedź 2 podane dalej 14 polubionychPokaż ten wątek -
Another thing games suck at: they all try to be like "oh well, when shit got hard, everyone turned into fuckin monsters ESPECIALLY people who lived in the countryside" and idk about you but that's not realistic at all.

because when shit goes bad it's human nature to band together since we're pack animals, and like, historically, communities, especially the smaller they get, are absolutely robust in the face of disaster because they're VERY good at working together

human behavior over the millennia is adapted to working really really well in small groups; disaster tends to be worse in large cities b/c technology is what allowed us to scale so like, in the event of an apocalypse, a town of 200 will be gr8

but people are like "no, some religious nutjob is going to be THIS IS GOD'S JUDGEMENT" and lose his mind and kill everyone and it's so BORING because actual human behavior in the face of disaster is way more interesting. But I live in a state where tornadoes destroy entire towns

anyways what im really saying is that I think Half-Life 3 should be about how the rebellion destroys the combine and then martyrs gordon freeman to invoke him as a Symbol of Power and Alyx rules with an iron fist, the end, good night, i love you all, play crackdown

Oh I forgot to finish that thought: right, so, I live in an extremely religious town. Like, there are 13 churches within two miles of my house. Thirteen!!!!! When a tornado hits no one sits around going "THIS WAS GOD'S JUDGEMENT WE'RE ALL FUCKED," they immediately start helping

I KNOW religious nutjobs, ok? I know people who think global warming is fake because god wouldn't let that happen, I know people who hate vaccines b/c god willt ake care of us, etc but even then even THEN when disaster strikes, they band together because we're social animals

One of the things I do miss about being in a religious community was just that - the community aspects. Yeah sometimes it sucked to see certain people every Sunday, but other people it was comforting to see, or something to look forward to.
