I just had to figure out how many PTO days I took off in 2018. The final number was 16. It's staggering to see it all at once. I consider myself to be a hard worker, but then you see numbers like that... I've just got to do better this year.

OR... and hear me out... 16 is still far fewer than many European countries. Americans believe that taking personal time to recharge and find some kind of balance is a mark of weakness. It's not. You were probably a better employee for the time you took off.

It's just that even to take two weeks is a LOT. In previous years, I've gotten away with 10 or fewer. But now I took two MORE days than most people get, and I got PAID for it? Makes me feel both greedy and lazy.

Mike is 100% correct. I'm fortunate enough to work for a UK company that gives time off that's far more generous than what we're used to here. Everyone is encouraged to take it all, and we all end up sharper and better at our jobs because of it.

The idea that you have to work yourself into the ground to have value is a terrible, made-up, American one.
