This glogi was lighter in flavor but with a bit more alcohol than the others I've had. I got that with a strudel made and served by an Austrian couple. Way less sweet than what you get in the US, but STUFFED with good, tart berries.
After that, I wanted to go to the weird bar I found on maps earlier, but first I had to reorient myself since I have no cell data and thus no map app while away from the hotel. I returned to the tram stop, and briefly ducked into a mall called Forum to warm up.
Nothing to note about Forum except generally, if you love shopping, Helsinki is a great place for it. Also at one point I accidentally wandered into a hardware store and pretended to be very interested in bolts for a minute before ducking out.
This little place was located just far enough off of Simonkatu that I was a bit nervous. Fewer people walking around. Smaller, darker stores. I told myself "if I don't see it this block, I'll turn back."
Where to begin? This is 100% the kind of self-aware bar that you fall in love with and become a regular at. Yes, that full title is the name of the barpic.twitter.com/CdueYq6KyO
They specialize, inexplicably, in gin and tonics and ramen?!pic.twitter.com/DHWMiBYW44
There was also a dog!!! I pet the dog. I think he works there. He was allowed behind the bar and into the kitchen but NOT into the ramen area, so I guess he's a trainee bartender.pic.twitter.com/7p77uvYnDG
I had never had a gin and tonic before but my personal rule for new food experiences is to try the local/house specialty. I ordered one with some orange-ness to it, figuring I wouldn't be able to tell whether or not it was a "good" gin and tonic or not.
After filling up on dog pets and liquids, it was time to head back. I'm so sad it's my last night here but so, so happy to have come.
Travel makes you better. Being a stranger makes you better, both more confident in yourself but humble toward your place in humanity. If you ever get a chance, go somewhere new and explore.
