I recognise that the industry doesn’t have to bow to my whim, that its growth is being generated by the millions upon millions of players who don’t mind lengthy updates and DO like investing their time into online games thankyouverymuch

But I’m starting to be increasingly conscious of the barrier technology puts between games and gamers in a way that no other form of entertainment does. Any blu-ray runs on any blu-ray player instantly. Same with albums/CDs.

Books are perhaps the best. There’s no barrier to entry, no worries about backwards compatibility if it’s old. You just pick up and dive in. But nothing immerses you in a fictional world like games.

Talk of future consoles hints at streaming-only devices, and there will inevitably be the push for 8K which will require even more complex hardware (and I’m still on a crappy 32-inch TV that, frankly, is an insult to my Xbox One X).

It all feels like it might be increasingly hard to keep up with. And, yet again, I know I’m in the minority’s but am I alone? Does anyone else feel like gaming was better when it was simpler, or shall I just accept I’m out of touch and resort to retro gaming?

Like I say, hoping that doesn’t come across as too petulant. Even in the course of typing this thread I’ve half convinced myself I’m probably whining about nothing. Just felt the need to whine.

[Additional] Didn’t even touch on the fact that the vast majority of online/mobile experiences are designed purely to consume your time and give you as many opportunities as possible to spend more cash. Games designed not to entertain or inspire but to mindlessly pass time

Not too petulant at all. I think it speaks to
@BrendanSinclair's point from the other day in the Spider-Man article about why accessibility is important. Same idea, different form.1 odpowiedź 0 podanych dalej 0 polubionych -

It's this. He's talking about game controls, but I think the arguments here expand to how consoles function and how games function on them as well. https://twitter.com/BrendanSinclair/status/1043210432322854912 …
