Hey, I appreciate the honest criticism of this. It was something I wrestled with a lot at every stage of this piece. Ultimately, I opted to run it because of the way the press around the game is being spun: as if the game has learned from last time, and somehow improved.

I think it's clear it hasn't, and I felt it was important that that be shown. I also didn't ask him what he thought of MeToo, he brought it up himself.

I don't feel I took bait in running this, and it was a really hard decision to weigh between giving a platform to these ideas or showing the smoke and mirrors of the marketing.

there's not enough pushback or challenge here to be a valid unveiling of the "smoke and mirrors" of marketing.

I don't think that's true. My specific questions aren't published here, and I don't think I softballed them, I just meant to say that I didn't glaze over things by saying "Yeah what about MeToo?" and then dropping the subject.

The majority of our interview involved discussion of the criticisms of the first game, and these were the responses he gave. I think they're really dang telling on their own.

There may have been other ways to approach the conversation that would have gotten...I dunno, stronger responses? I guess to that all I can say is that I'm still learning how to do that. I mean it when I say I'm glad you're talking to me about this.

Ewww, I'm with Holly on all of it. You really let him lead the conversation. He gets to say that everything he's doing is good, and that he's being a nice, considerate boy, with little examination in the article about how skin-crawling his attitude is. He played you.

I believe you when you say that you think his responses are telling...because you said, plainly, that you think his responses are telling. Within the published work, there's little evidence of your attitude. Your neutrality implicitly reads as agreement and support.

And if that's how it reads to any part of the audience then there's not much I can say except I'll take it as a lesson going forward. Neutral tone is fairly standard for the kind of site and pieces we do and typical audience. But, if it didn't land as intended, it didn't.

Absolutely. I hate to be this harsh, but you seem equipped to handle it, and this stuff truly does matter.
