It's not pronouns though. Story involves survey data that provided information on how collectively those four identifying groups responded, but does not give individual data for each one. non-binary was the term they provided but I wasn't sure it was right for transgender folks.

You're right on that assumption. In that context I don't know anything myself. Gun to my head I'd probably blurt out gender minorities but that's coming out of my butt admittedly.

Non-binary(sometimes abbreviated as NB or "enby") are folks who were assigned a binary gender at birth but doesn't reflect their true graduated gender identity which, for most sensible definitions, is synonymous with trans. But they are typically referred to as NB, not trans...

My goal here is to simplify things down just enough for a headline or strap while going into further detail in the piece. do you feel "Transgender and non-binary individuals" would effectively cover the four categories listed with respect to all involved?

I mean, depends on the four? That would cover trans men, trans women and NBs. What's the fourth group?

Oh I'm so sorry, the tweet with the question didn't make it into this thread, and because I worded the initial tweet *very* badly it ended up misleading. I'm so sorry.

The actual question: What would be an appropriate noun (if any) to collectively to refer to a group of individuals identifying variously as "transgender", "androgynous", "gender fluid", or "other"?

Oof, that is a harder one. Tbh, if only for a headline, IMHO, with clarification in the article, saying "transgender, androgynous and genderqueer" would cover most bases at the top level.

Tho as a binary trans woman, you may wanna put that one up for a vote to the Twitterverse in case I'm mistaken.

Honestly based on your feedback and that of others I'm getting a strong feeling of 1) Ask for the dang methodology on this and 2) Figure out a different headline.

(as in, same story, but don't try to collective noun folks who aren't collective nouned)

Basically, yeah. It can be a touchy subject, especially given it's literally about identity ;)
