Germane wisdom from Carl Sagan's "The Demon-Haunted World." We could really use Carl Sagan right about now. Fortunately, he left his words.

Did you know that ground sloths the size of elephants were a thing? Here’s some mummified skin with fur belonging to a ~10,000 year old ground sloth called Mylodon darwinii, found inside a cave in Chile.

A crescent Earth rising over the Moon, seen from Apollo 14 on February 6, 1971. Not as famous as the Apollo 8 Earthrise, but this one has such an eerie beauty.

Maybe 7 years ago the Economist wrote this article about "zombie democracies" in which elected leaders say "but I won" as they hollow out/undermine the institutions that allow for free and fair elections. They wrote it about Russia and Turkey but now would have more case studies.

This excellent little primate, Notharctus, has a stubby little "thumb" which likely helped it to scamper through the Eocene trees.

"The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope has produced the highest resolution image of the Sun’s surface ever taken. In this picture taken at 789nm, we can see features as small as 30km (18 miles) in size for the first time ever." 🤯 AMAZING (NSO/AURA/NSF)

Goodnight & farewell to our fellow great observatory ! Today, in just a few hours, Spitzer goes dark. But for the past 16 years it has helped shine such a (infrared) light on our Universe. Some favorite Spitzer-Chandra-Hubble+ data sets:

With today's launch, now has (by my count) around 250 satellites in orbit. By the end of the year, it could be pushing 1,000. But are the world's systems for controlling space traffic up for the volume of new satellites? Critics say no.

Aggressively not watching the Starlink launch. More sky litter coming, making it just a little harder for the entire world to appreciate the stillness of the night sky and for astronomers to learn about the universe.
