We ran an ICA on mental health questionnaire data from the @uk_biobank and ran a GWAS on the independent components. We only included individuals without a diagnosis of psychiatric disorder. Next, we ran genetic correlations between the ICs and with psychiatric disorders.

We also found that these symptom profiles in healthy individuals are genetically correlated with a range of psychiatric disorders and cognitive traits. The strongest effect typically occurred between closely related profiles and psychiatric disorders.

Interesting idea! It looks like ancestry was handled by dropping SNPs that failed HWE. Have you done simulations with null data + this ICA approach to estimate the potential for residual stratification?

Thank you! Good point. When we performed the analysis, we have indeed looked at qq plots for ICs based on permuted data to rule out that cryptic relatedness may explain patterns.
