Asymptomatic transmission is one of the biggest things that's been used to justify draconian travel bans and quarantines. Mistakes are going to happen when everything is moving this fast, but we HAVE to get better at making lack of clarity/certainty clear in publications!

So maybe we need to talk about being really careful to note uncertainties like "we haven't talked to the index patient" when publishing things that have major policy implications.

I'm almost as curious as to why the science/medicine sides are often so disturbed by the idea that it's more complicated than just info deficit as I am by how the other positions form and maintain themselves. I have thoughts, but that's a later project.

People get weirdly upset when you say there is more going on around anti-vax and fringe health theories than just information deficit. If facts changed those positions, wouldn't they be gone by now? Clearly, current approaches aren't working, so looking for why is necessary.

I'm still laughing. I am also designing a fancy Science Commissar hat for in my head. Suggestions?

Why do people insist on making tech we've already had Black Mirror episodes on? We need to have better conversations about death and grieving, not create automated facsimiles of those we miss.

Australia has followed the US and has issued a travel ban on all travelers from China unless they are Australian citizens. This directly contradicts ’s PHEIC recommendations against travel restrictions. I expect will ask Australia to justify itself under Art 43.

I think I'd actually prefer my brain giving me random anxiety memories as I try to sleep than jolting me awake with a good sentence every time I try to drift off. In related news, I must find a notes app that does night mode. This is my least favorite part of writing days.

And why do I keep seeing links to a recent upload of a Kevin E Hovind (US evangelical pastor) from accounts claiming to be non-religious sources of "natural health"? (Video discusses the depopulation through vaccines theory)

I am genuinely fascinated as to where the depopulation fantasies come from. I've now seen them for so many diseases that I am just baffled. I get that they link to some old US evangelical tribulation theories, but still - why so common?!

Honestly, I thought we'd figured this out in the 19th C with the International Sanitary Conventions (and 30 years of negotiations before). I am increasingly convinced that we're reliving the 1880s for some hellish reason.

Current favorite comment "That's not how cholera works!" on a marked quote from 1832. This poor kid's rage was strong in the first few chapters. Do we forget to tell people that it wasn't that long ago we didn't know how many diseases worked? People did weird things in response.

I love getting the used version of books that has someone else's notes. This one is clearly a science student reading about social responses to disease and it's hilarious. They're so mad. Small joys in comps reading!

Can confirm this is absolutely what would have happened at the bookstore I worked in years ago.

This is a great thread on why the "nCoV is an escaped weapon" thing is silly. I don't quite understand why every new outbreak now a BW theory comes up in some form, but it does.

This is a question my class asked, and we interrogated about today. This is what we found—and bear in mind we’re talking primarily about consequentialism this week, so we’re still in that lane. Sorry to my Kantian and adjacent peeps ;-) [thread]

Out today is the first peer-reviewed basic reproduction number (R_0) estimate for . Consistent with ranges presented by others in pre-print (including me & 's), this team finds a mean R_0 of 2.2 []. Useful time-to-event distributions too.

There is no evidence that it was a bioweapon, and any claims that it is willfully spreads misinformation and is incredibly irresponsible. In fact, it would be a terrible bioweapon because of blowback. A good bioweapon in theory has high lethality but low, not hi, communicability

Racism around disease has always been a present, but in this outbreak it has been handled badly and is growing quickly. The US has a long history of using disease as an excuse to discriminate again Chinese-American communities and it's starting again.
