As a rule of thumb, academics earn maybe 1/2 of what they could earn if they went to industry (after picking up some skills, of course). So why be an academic? More freedom, and more travel. If you take away our international conferences, the bottom falls out of the whole thing.

Industry is very uneven w.r.t. travel. In academia if you have a postdoc in Western Europe you have travel funding and you are expected to use it.
