My take: hot garbage. A frantic, incoherent pastiche of SW tropes that came very close to doing something I thought no movie could ever do, which is ruin Star Wars for me entirely. I agree w/ @alissamarie - if anything she wasn't negative enough.https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/18/21021188/star-wars-rise-of-skywalker-review-no-spoilers …

It was bad on every level -- on big themes and story, but also just on a scene-by-scene level. It felt like a trailer, like a cut-together reel of highlight scenes, but that's all there was! No set up, no character work, no emotional resonance. I felt nothing at any point.

The writing was abysmal. To take just one example of dozens: Finn says "there's something I never told you" to Rey. Then they reference it later. And then ... YOU NEVER FIND OUT WHAT IT IS. It just drifts away. Chekov's gun, not only not fired, just never seen again!

"Lightspeed skipping" is one of many things in the movie that serves to render the previous events & rules of the franchise utterly incoherent. Tie fighters can't go into lightspeed! You can't just jump without calculating!

Now we can heal through the force? Teleport objects with the force? Force ghosts can intervene in the physical world, manipulate objects? Han f'ing Solo is a force ghost now? I know the force has always been fuzzy but this just abandons any sense at all.

Abrams & defenders call this stuff "nitpicking," they say you're not supposed to care if anything fits with anything else or has any internally coherent rules. Allegedly all "fans" want is just images, scenes, & lines they've gotten before. Just a reheated stew of tropes.

But fuck that. Of course SW has always had some holes & things that don't make sense, but it was the story, the characters, & the internal rules of the universe that gave it power. Audiences should not surrender to this notion that nothing matters but tweetable scenes.

The movie very explicitly undoes & reverses all the most interesting elements of The Last Jedi. Luke went from a conflicted human being to a generic Mentor Wizard spouting cereal-box platitudes. Any ambiguity about the worth of the jedi went out the window.

The Palpatine stuff doesn't hold up to a microsecond of scrutiny. After he inexplicably failed to die in TRJ (or...came back to life?), he ... went off & had a son? Like, a normal, clean-cut looking son, who had a daughter? And they escaped him? Whaaaaat?

Every single scene with Leia is a massive, massive cringe -- stilted & awkward. I can't believe they did so much of it! People were laughing out loud in the theater. And when the CGI'd young Luke & Leia? Painful. PAINFUL.

It's just all so depressing. Rian Johnson made an interesting, original movie, a bunch of whiny fanboys complained, & so we got this. This, apparently, is what "fans" want: no original story, no characters that make sense, no thought, just reheated tropes we've all seen before.

None of this was helped by the, I kid you not, 30 FULL MINUTES of trailers & ads before the movie, which were almost entirely for thoughtless junk, remakes & re-remakes, the fast food that Disney will now be shoveling down our throats for the rest of time.

In sum, screw JJ Abrams, screw Disney, & screw the "fans" that made this happen. The more I think about it the more I think The Last Jedi is the only movie outside the original trilogy that's worth a damn. We deserved better than this.

I'm going to leave this thread open because I'm certain to think of more things I hated & want to bitterly rant about. Feel free to ignore, feel free to argue, but warning: anyone who says "it's just a movie" or a variant is going to get insta-blocked.

One more: it's one thing to say a filmmaker failed to convey the story/characters intended, like there are gaps they didn't fill. But in this movie, there's no indication Abrams HAD any coherent story or characters to convey. There's nothing to solve. It's all just random noise.

"Hm, I can't do another Death Star, they'll kill me. Uh ... lemme see ... I've got it! Death Ships!"

Another thing: the shambles that Disney has made of Star Wars really puts a spotlight on the miracle that Marvel has pulled off. Marvel movies aren't genius, but they are solid, consistent, & they fit with one another. They had a guiding vision from the beginning.
