Today on Volts: electrolyzers! A decarbonized energy system needs lots & lots of green (zero-emissions) hydrogen, which is made using electrolyzers. Today we dig in to what they are, how they work, and how their costs can rapidly be driven down.

Electrolyzers are probably the single most important clean-energy technology that no one hypes or understands or even pays much attention to. It's an odd gap right in the middle of the discourse. Don't be part of the problem: listen to the pod!

Hm ... what do I need to do to get you excited about electrolyzers, Twitter? They're the key to green hydrogen, which is key to decarbonizing industry & developing long-duration storage! Cheap renewable electricity + cheap electrolyzers = decarb basically solved!

When I was 13, I made an electrolyzer out of the plate voltage from an old tube radio (300V), vinegar and water. Pure hydrogen and oxygen. I melted the insulation in the transformer! 🤣 I expect the tech has come a long way since then.
