Seattle's idiot land-use policies in a nutshell: we're spending over $100M to build a light-rail station & it'll be surrounded by a golf course, a park, and a bunch of single-family homes. Leaving *billions* in possible development on the table. Madness.

Forgot to mention: it's also plopped down right next to Interstate 5. Seattle is using light rail as a direct substitute for interstate commuting -- it's lowest possible value with the lowest possible multiplier effect. This is the least we could get for our transit dollars.

That misplaced apostrophe in "it's" is there forever I guess. 😒

This video is an extremely lucid & eye-opening explanation for why this way of using of transit sucks & how to do it better.

An interesting counter example in the USA is Assembly Row, outside of Boston which combined a new T stop with dense mixed use development and went, in about 5 years, from not much of anything to a genuinely fun and interesting place.

This reminds me of when my family visited San Francisco and we tried to use their transit system. It cost an arm and leg and we still had to get an Uber at the far end (and when we got back because the hotel shuttle apparently only runs when they feel like it.)

Not Just Bikes has so very many great videos, including that one! The picture of the streetcar network in L.A. (RIP) just makes me cry.
