Thanks for all the comments. I should have prefaced that this is a tweet related to US alone.

So these numbers are roughly 1 in 100 people needing to be hospitalized for the flu, while for Coronavirus it's apparently 1 in 5 needing to be hospitalized. Not trying to be alarmist, just pointing out how this is straining health care systems in China. Not the same
-
But why are we alarmed here in the US but ignore the common flu?

I basically wear a mask all flu season plus I get the flu shot. Yah the flu sucks and you should be scared of it. The problem is not a lack of concern for coronavirus but a lack of concern for flu.

Perceived Standard versus extraordinary perceived risk. Worry about driving when tired or angry is arguably biggest real amendable risk factor ( and having zero - low compromise on immune system )

Driving while texting....

10k. Ten thousand. Ten THOUSAND people have DIED of the flu, just this season? That seems like it should be a bigger story. Also this is why I prefer to leave my house as little as possible.
-
Agree. It should be a bigger story but guess it doesn’t ‘sell’.

Is it not possible to worry about both? I think both warrant worry.
-
Absolutely and the protective measures (wash hands, cover cough, stay home when sick) are largely the same. The current risk in US of Coronovirus is rather low, but media seems to have run amok with scare mongering.
