Thanks for all your responses everyone! I didn't think this tweet would get that much attention! I know I said I'd try have this out by Monday. But this rapidly became a very large article. I'll try have it ready for the weekend. (A bunch of y'all have also been quoted).
Understand how things work before trying to pull them apart to find bugs.
Avoid shortcuts.
Avoid making excuses because you need the perfect laptop/OS/setup, just hack

Read&Write code every week.
Make friends! Take people out for coffees where possible and don't underestimate extra-curricular activities. They show passion, which goes a long way!

Always ask questions. Never stop asking questions. Start asking questions with google and if that doesn’t work ask questions on twitter. Don’t stop until you find an answer. And then start asking new questions.
I often have this belief of "always be a student" and the less sugar coated way of saying it is "be the dumbest person in the room" how are you meant to learn and grow otherwise!

If you're a student, don't just take the course at what it is, expect to and actually go learn more. Join the uni club, go to cons/meetups pay attention and talk to people.
100% I often say almost anyone can do a course but how do you improve and better yourself!
