I wrote a book, but per my editor, it still needs work. Otherwise, I spend my time relearning math, playing with options, and getting outside whenever possible.

I inherited my love for bowling from a Great Uncle. We would play all afternoon before treating ourselves to an ice cream cone. Bowling’s the great middle-class luxury sport.

I’ve spent the past week trying to understand my deceased father-in-law through the marginalia in his books. Much of his interests in math and physics was far above the abilities of the average person. And I’m no different, I’ll take a few back home, but many are beyond me.

What?! I loved WKRP in Cincinnati as a kid. The Thanksgiving Turkey episode was one of the best.

Many software products are seeking a problem to solve rather than resolving existing issues. I would also add the waste of effort, time, and money skipping over the first principle concepts for the product you’re creating.

It’s so bizarre that a person’s death becomes a huge administrative task. Right when everyone involved is diminished emotionally and physically.

My morning walks have taken on greater importance this past week to clear my head and redirect my energies to family. One side benefit is strolling through landscapes where I imagine myself Van Gogh moving about the French countryside.

I'm in horror watching people traipse through the house without taking their shoes off. I keep staring at their dirty feet as they walk through. 😐

The next time you visit a parent(s). Check the prices for renting a dumpster or hire an estate seller to get started. The reality is that half of what you or your parents have, no one else wants. Hell, even they don’t want their stuff.

Maintaining development environments is why I stopped coding and redirected my efforts on a different career path in tech. I liked writing software, but working in product & ceding development to more talented people has afforded me other opportunities.

A chatty guy at the crematorium is the last thing I expected for a Monday. “We gotta get that hot. Like real hot to burn the body to ash. Over 1400°F, sometimes hotter. Usually, get it done in a few hours, but if the person is big, we’re talking some real hours there.” 😐

I can’t stress this enough. Unless you’re leaving a position with enough money where you never need to work again, it doesn’t pay to burn bridges as you leave town. People never forget a douche canoe.

I wonder if humanity is to the point where we stop looking to technological solutions to resolve climate changes and instead focus on modifying individual behaviours. Putting faith in technological advancements to fixing this is a fools' errand.

Working on the weekend is an awful life choice as it shows a lack of ability to prioritise. It’s okay on occasion but terrible long-term. It reminds me of university students when they take a grade instead of a pass/fail on an unimportant course—set boundaries of importance.

The Times piece on “How to Be a Caregiver” is a pretty solid start for many who are coming to realise the complexities of caring for a loved one as we grow older.

Navigating elderly care with hospice, the pitfalls of assisted living centres, and whether or not you’re doing the right thing for a loved one is challenging. There’s no easy path where you’re not self-doubting every decision.
