New paper! Moths ARE metamaterials. Our new paper explores the amazing properties of the scale covered wings of moths. We found that they absorb sound energy from echolocating bats, granting them acoustic camouflage and helping them avoid detection. https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2020/11/17/2014531117 …pic.twitter.com/xxTN5h44GY

The mechanism for sound absorption is complex and means the scales qualify as a sound absorbing metamaterial. Naturally occurring metamaterials are extremely rare and had previously never been described in the world of acoustics.... until now!pic.twitter.com/LatNCUTjhk

I know it’s a semantic argument, but doesn’t the fact a structure exists in nature necessarily make it not a metamaterial? Obviously doesn’t lessen your findings at all and maybe I’m just misunderstanding the conventional definition of metamaterial?

Yes indeed, describing a naturally occurring material as a metamaterial does sound a bit counter intuitive, depending on your definition. However, the moth wings satisfy all the defining characteristics of a metamaterial.

I'm so sad that I have a pathological hatred of them. I can't be anywhere near one without my hackles getting up!

My spouse too, I've had to enter the house before him to turn off the porch light so that the moths leave before he can approach the door.

That's fascinating. I love bats so it's very interesting to see how their prey are evolving to try and survive.
