It’s simply not fair that many West Australians wait over a year for an appointment, while others can use taxpayer-subsidised private health insurance to jump the queue to care. We need a more equitable system.

Good article though — great insight into the reality of barriers to access to care even for those who thought they were covered.

Re private health insurance, Ranjana Srivastava says: “a solution seems to be out of the reach of even the best minds.” Au contraire: many minds agree that reducing PHI rebates & redirecting savings to the public system would help. Just difficult politics.

Good to see some acknowledgment of social determinants of health in the WA Sustainable Health Review interim report. Prevention needs to go well beyond individual actions. As the WHO says, let's put "health in all policies".

It is a sad and sorry day when any doctor has to explain to any politician that better primary care and preventative medicine is the best investment that Australia can make in health right now. And I'm speaking as a hospital doctor.

Step 3: Political parties are to commit genuinely to funding prevention of disease in the community rather than wasting funds on treating same disease in hospitals. Commit to primary care & general practice:

Health Ministers are obsessed with spending $$$ on hospitals and political thought bubbles. Patients who need to see their GP have just been ignored and neglected. We all have been held hostage by inadequate funding for too long. The consequences are obvious.

Coal is a health issue (via air pollution & climate change), which is why we’ve signed this letter to the Victorian EPA. You can too!

Should “the government ... do more to keep private health insurance affordable"? This idea is delusional, says . It’s all about profit.
