Thank you for writing this - it's definitely something I've struggled with. Feels like "reinventing the wheel", but it's mostly just "trying to understand the domain". I end up cycling from productive to anxious and back over the course of a couple monthshttps://twitter.com/rfinz/status/944851558616809473?s=19 …

Thanks, I'm glad other people are getting something out of this! I do a *lot* of wheel-reinventing, for the same reason. It just seems necessary - it might be an old wheel, but it's a new one for me, and I need to poke and prod at it for a while.

This phenomenon seems to explain why I had such a terrible reaction to high school maths 'not being made of people'. I am struggling to pick up a lot of the nitty gritty of programming (git, PostgreSQL, bash) because it all seems SO arbitrary.

Yep, I know what you mean! Bash is particularly bad for that. Git has a nice concrete model hidden below the bullshittery (http://pgbovine.net/command-line-bullshittery.htm …), but I still don't have the two strongly linked in my head so it's mostly typing in bullshit still.
