Now reading "Talking about Machines" and I'm more than a little surprised that this isn't more widely known about software developers. It's readable, relatable, and helps make sense of a bunch of professional contexts.

Looking through the list and reminding myself of what else is on it, I've previously read Philosophical Investigations and it's good but I'm not into it. I don't regret reading it, but too much of the good bits are already in common knowledge to be quite worth reading for me.

Oh, Sorting Things Out is great of course, but given that it's on the list partly because I borderline-badgered him into reading it it's not very surprising that I think that.

Godel Escher Bach is on the list. We'll... have to agree to disagree on that one. I understand why it's on the list even though I hate it.

What did you hate about it? I loved it, though it took me quite a while to get through.

Couldn't stand the style. An extremely high ratio of being impressed with itself to useful content.

On a scale from 1 to Chaitin just how self satisfied was it?

I don't think I've read any Chaitin. It was pretty self-satisfied. Also I think I read GEB nearly twenty years ago so my memory of it is too hazy to answer detailed questions.

I don't remember it being self-satisfied (also read it nearly 20 years ago, though, so). It's very whimsical, and very enthusiastic: I found that charming, but I can see how it might grate.

There is a sort of whimsy that comes from play and a sort of whimsy that comes from wanting to show off, and it's not always easy to distinguish between the two, and it's possible I misjudged but at the time I got very strong vibes of the latter.

I have really limited tolerance for whatever kind of whimsy Hofstadter does. Skimmed the Bach bits then gave up.
