Somewhat tangentially, I’ve been working on-and-off on a post that says “I don’t understand the map-vs-territory distinction” for about five years now. I’ve failed to finish it because I don’t even understand what I don’t understand… It’s been “nearly done” that whole time tho

It seems like some people seemingly intuitively understand it (e.g. LessWrong, general semantics) and some people seemingly understand it but think it's contradictory

Well fwiw the point of the essay is that the LW take is seriously misleading and close to the root of how they misunderstand everything.

I'm some combination of another '+1 would read this post' and 'oh god I wasted so much time trying to understand what LW meant by that 3 years ago and never want to think about it again, but would still read this post' :)

Our intermittent emails about it have been very helpful or very unhelpful depending partly on whether I ever finish it

Oh good, I'm glad they were at least potentially helpful and not me just ranting on! I never got to any useful understanding myself, and I haven't looked at my horrible draft in a while.

before today, I most recently looked at my horrible draft a month ago and said “I should just finish this thing, it’s nearly done” and put another two or three days work into it, and realized it’s not nearly done.

It’s Yet Another Way Of Explaining The Whole Thing From A Different Angle, so limiting scope is difficult If you take on board that maps don’t work like that, and nothing else does either, then you have to throw away the whole mainstream philosophical tradition

OK yeah I really do want to read this!! But can also see how hard it's going to be to split that out from approximately 1000 of the other interconnected things you talk about

I keep thinking of OTHER ways actual maps work nothing like LW “maps,” and each one illuminates some OTHER important way rationalism is fucked, and the line of investigation seems productive enough that I don’t want to cut it off… but how much time is it worth?
