i get the sense that in the olden days in fiction the narrator was more of a character and the narration was more of an event. like "oh i'm the mc writing this down after the story you're about to read happened" now in fiction the narration itself often goes unexplained

this is very close actually! i’m reminded of one of my favorite bits in the golden compass towards the beginning where the narrator talks about the history of lyra’s interactions with the other children - zooming back into the past in a way that the TV series had to skip over
