as much as i hate being misunderstood, the experience is reinforcing a valuable lesson: from the perspective of raw engagement, the potential for being misunderstood - especially as an attack on some identity, and double especially as a dumb attack - is a feature, not a bug

every time content is seen and interpreted by a new mind, a new mutation of it appears in that mind, and the most "successful" mutations are the ones that produce engagement, esp. shares. it's probably the worst feature of social media that hate-engagement is still engagement

it doesn't even have to be "bad on purpose to make you click" although the incentives point that way - tumor cells arise from random mutations and they still successfully divert blood from the rest of your body to feed themselves https://twitter.com/TRULY_RELAXED/status/1197771519125946370 …

on twitter in particular, the fact that RTs happen on the level of individual tweets and clicking through to read context requires an extra action means that RTs (and QTs) are an excellent way to make tweets (which already have little room for nuance) easier to misunderstand

moreover (not relevant to my experience, just a general observation) the spread of the "dogwhistle" meme actively encourages this kind of misunderstanding, by making it virtuous to read tweets in the worst way possible (and then, while hating on them, *continue spreading them*)

not sure what to do with this. i could stop posting hot takes... or i could learn to enjoy being misunderstood 🤔https://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1199797177775575040 …

Not surprised the maths one went bad... I was pretty sure I knew what you were going for from context (and your replies confirmed that) but without that very easy to read as joyless 'only do useful things' advocacy. Twitter looks like hard work once you leave your context bubble.

i imagine i could've anticipated this and adjusted for it a bit with like a minute of additional thought. but maybe i would've just run into a different exciting misreading 😐

Yeah this is true, particularly as 'angrily misreading things' is such a popular way to use twitter
