Yeah, I don't think you could pull it off at an academic conference. Academics really like their ritual savaging of the speakers and get cranky if you tell them they're not allowed to draw blood.

I might have to go to a tech conference some time just to see the cultural differences/get exposed to other ideas on how to do talks. I'm involved in some workshops that are very different to normal physics culture but we're probably missing some good tricks.
