I've been thinking about the alethiometer for a while now as a good symbol of something like the preformal - formal - postformal transition. But looks like Pullman's just straight out going there, I don't even have to make it up myself.

Haha, I've been reading on kindle so I hadn't even noticed it was so long! It's not particularly fast moving either, everyone is just wandering around Oxford getting into various intrigues. But I've been enjoying the pace.
