"you can only learn doing by doing." Lots of gems in this article, thanks for the link! Have you read Hamming's book "The Art of Science and Engineering : Learning to Learn" ?

That is a great book; I second the recommendation!

Know of any others along the same lines? I've heard of "Letters to a young mathematician" and a few others, always looking for more.

There’s startlingly little like that. Seems so valuable; why not? Someone must have a collection somewhere… If not, you could do a great service by gathering and linking them.

In math, there’s Thurston’s “Proof and Progress”, plus Gian-Carlo Rota’s essays. And Polya of course, although I didn’t personally find him helpful. I’m drawing a blank for science and engineering, although I feel confident I do know of some good “how to” books in both fields

You could check the websites of
@drossbucket and@michael_nielsen; one or both may have a list somewhere. It’s the sort of thing they they think about2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

There's dozens, though I've never collected them. I quite like Littlewood's Miscellanea. And two of the best bios are Skidelsky on Keynes (get the abridged, "short" version), and Gleick on Feynman.

Interesting, didn't know the Skidelsky bio. I like the Gleick one a lot too. I thought @Meaningness was looking for something related but slightly different, though, books that are explicitly *about* how to learn a subject?

(But of course reading the great practitioners in a field, or about them, might be a better way to impart the same thing.)
