It’s the fourth editor rolled out to http://wordpress.com (which we are both using to our detriment) and is badly broken in that cms. Suspect http://wp.com cannot survive its current state of brokeness. I am planning to bail out to django eventually.
No, I'm using the .com one too, and am actually happy with it (unless they've changed it again in the last few days). I probably have very different tastes in what I want from an editor though.

What theme are you working with? Also, are you css editing? That’s where we are finding bugs (css customisation using twenty sixteen). Wondering whether I should switch themes but probably not worth it now.

Ah, ok, I have the free version with no option for css customisation (I think?) so have not come across that. That would explain the difference in what we're seeing. My theme is apparently something called Plane.
