I think I had read this and forgotten it, so thanks for the reminder! This fits into the general observation I have that we are bad at teaching thinking. It's not obvious to me that the best way to learn how to think like someone is to study their work they've already distilled.
Though as a side note one thing mathematicians do lose by not studying old mathematicians is actual factual content. There's a phenomenally large amount of mathematics that just gets forgotten because the trends move on
