I didn't realise what the point of practising writing was for an embarrassingly long time. I thought it was pretty much the same thing as monologuing a load of verbal thoughts in my head while walking along, which I did all the time...

... but it turns out that the monologuey types of thought sound good locally, but globally they'll just go round and round the same old crap for years without progressing.

My writing hasn't improved at the sentence level, because walking-and-thinking actually does practise that. But now it sometimes goes somewhere.
