I think I learned the gist of both at the time, although I didn't actually read either. There's a subtext in both about elementary school math teaching for disadvantaged populations that is more political than I'm comfortable with.

My recollection is that the math involved doesn't go much beyond arithmetic, if that's a consideration. To some degree I think Phil was steelmanning Lave and Walkerdine by attributing his own insights to them. I may misremember.
