    years ago, I was walking in a park in Pittsburgh and saw a man playing an oud, and stopped to listen. He insisted I try it out, so I did (very badly), but it was a lovely moment. He was a very kind Sudanese refugee named Usama living in the US during the "war on terror".

    there was a guy mowing a lawn using one of those standing mowers, and had a running leaf blower strapped to his back that he would occasionally unholster and use while leaving the mower running. So he had two small noisy polluting gasoline engines running all the time.

    And this is why that new provision that makes 18 year olds eligible to begin their truck driving careers is, as pointed out to me, not so much a solution to a shortage of workers but a means to pump more, vulnerable people into a system that's screwing them.

    In 1980, the average trucker made $120,000 a year (in 2020 dollars). In 2019 truckers earned $45,000–this is from new book. A 63% decrease. Tell us more about the so-called trucker shortage though…

    even instant process food has more variety. I have an international market in my neighborhood where you can get fifty varieties of instant noodles (for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese tastes), boxed mixes for rasam and idli, and heat-and-eat frozen Lebanese dinners

    I could leave the house in the morning and be back before evening with fresh lychee, ostrich tenders, duck blood for soup, and 3 different kinds of tamales. Most urban folks probably could. And that, in the grand scheme of things, is brand new.

    I'm glad there are finally attempts arising to examine issues like transphobia through a misinfo lens! So many places refuse to do so but there is clear, checkable claims made.

    Great sign for your "just asking questions" movement when people cannot write about it under their real names for fear of harassment.
