    We would like to say the problem is that a secularizing culture is put off by the scandal of the cross, the supernatural, the demands of repentance. But when folks think “American evangelical” right now, do they think of our commitment to costly discipleship? Not likely.

    Some will say, “Yes, but this is just a matter of self-identification.” We should still ask- *why* do people, especially a lot of younger people, not want to “identify” as evangelical Christians?

    These data points are revealing- and should be troubling to all of us who are evangelical Christians. Time for renewal, repentance, and redirection. Time to seek the kingdom first again.
