happens to me all the time with a deadline and pressure to focus on one thing, my mind gets extremely obsessive and creative but about something totally different. i recall a similar story by brothers Strugatski, in Russian. must be well a known phenomenon.
Before very important Jan. event, told myself "no thinking about new directions until all prep is done & we get past it." Oddly, this triggered flood of new ideas (written down for later).
