How can one infer a design from a complex system that was designed without a mind?
In the spirit of https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1005268 … I ask folks who infer gene regulatory networks: has anyone tried 1) create a synthetic (cell free?) set of transcription factors, 2) profile gene levels, 3) reconstruct GRN - does the result look anything like circuit that's really there?

People try to reconstruct gene-regulatory networks often; sometimes the results are even predictive/useful for controlling the system, so perhaps not hopeless. Evolution exploits various laws of math/complexity/networks so perhaps discovering these in evolved systems is possible.
