I think physicists would love an understandable picture of what’s inside, we just don’t have one

Agreed, but I think many believe that it's fundamental that in some cases, there is *no* clockwork inside, not just a temporary wait until we find out.

I think the difference most would point to is that QM is at least a model, formulated without data, that has testable predictions. The ramdomness has to be taken for granted, but it is a theoretical assumption with clear mathematical predictions that can be tested. (1/2)

But can't the quantitative predictions of black box models, for data they've never seen before (which some handle nicely), be likewise "mathematical predictions that can be tested"?

They do say that. Are they correct? (They are correct if you can afford to routinely ignore what they routinely ignore.)

I don't know, but I am open to the possibility that explanatory successes of the traditional scientific method of the 1600's are "low hanging fruit" in a sense; no guarantee that every aspect of nature is understandable *in this way*, and maybe we encounter aspects that aren't.pic.twitter.com/ArtzUjF16k

The popular QM label for that is "shut up and calculate".

This is spectacularly wrong. QM theories are rigorously defined math that is in fact extremely elegant and simple given the generality of what they describe. We just cannot come up with an intuitive mechanistic picture to go with that math. Some early QM physicists threw 1/2

up their hands and said: Maybe we should just not try. Nowadays this is no longer accepted as a satisfactory answer by most QM physicists. 2/2
