Physicists had no hope of tracking each gas particle velocity so invented thermodynamics. Are we losing out on biology's "Boyle's law" etc. because it seems like it might be possible to track life's microstates (molecular imaging, RNAseq, etc.) so that's where the emphasis goes?

IMHO thermodynamics comes before the idea of gas particles. Even energy quanta was derived using standard thermodynamics. Biology's "Boyles law" will be need if life is emergent no matter how well we can track microstates of life. The sooner we realise that the better!

For every systemic question there is an optimal coarse graining with effective parts being discussed in an appropriate language maximizing insight. Besides that there is no way completely tracking lifes microstates, it is not useful for understanding upmost macro levels.

I thought they invented statistical mechanics and thermodynamics is just one use case.

Most if not all Laws are simplifications and or averages of large data sets of similar yet different samples. 🤨🤫🤠🧐

if you think thermodynamics is a simplification, I assume you never studied it :D. and 'averages' doesnt really do justice to the range of analytic techniques people bring to bear on large datasets.

Way to twist words... I can tell you're not trying to perform science, hints: your use of 'assumption'. Obviously, you have the ability to move forward without thoroughly inspecting your viewpoint. Of course, there is plenty of confirmation on the Laws of Thermodynamics.

History is repute with Paradigm shifts. If you think we have reached the end of the scientific process your egotistically at best.
