Recognising someone as a human being, however flawed, shouldn't be contingent on believing they are correct, and making fun of other people's ridiculous beliefs is mostly a way of helping you pretend that you couldn't fall into that trap.

Everyone believes wrong things, and pointing and laughing when you discover a particular instance of that mostly just creates a culture where people will hold on to their wrong beliefs more tightly.

It's OK to be lacking crucial empathy skills BTW. Empathy is really very hard (and people who claim it's not are lying to you and probably to themselves). The important thing is to recognise when you do, and to work on that when it impacts others.

Yeah, there are so many disincentives against being good at thinking in public.

I used to have the.. opposite thing? Telling people "if you understand where this person is coming from, HOW DARE YOU STILL BE ANGRY AT THEM" Actually, I can't figure out if it's the opposite thing, or the same thing but in disguise, or something orthogonal
-
Oh yeah this version is definitely wrong too. I do find it's easier to not be angry at someone if I understand where they're coming from, but it's entirely possible for me to decide that they're coming from a bad place and be furious with them for it.

It amazes me how often people say something like "I can't imagine believing...", like lacking imagination is a killer argument.

Some of it's people revelling in actually having an in-group large enough to get to do it for once. It's not helping tbh, meme format or no.

"can't imagine" is colloquial for disapproval. i don't think it implies one has tried and failed and concluded it's literally beyond their abilities
-
I think in a lot of cases there's a genuine gap of understanding, but yes I'm aware that it's often disingenuous phrasing.
