Lynn Goldman’s Tweets

CDC now helpfully providing real-time info about all respiratory infections at a community level… & state and local public health departments are in the best position to evaluate the capacity for care. In many communities across the US, healthcare already is overwhelmed.

This winter, early surges of RSV & flu, overwhelmed emergency rooms & Children’s hospitals & an expected COVID surge, mean masking in public makes sense and will work to slow transmission. Heed the advice of state and local public health!

Happy to announce that @juliastrasser is the new director of the Jacobs Institute of Women’s Health (@WHIjournal) - an important center here at our school. She's taking over from Dr. Susan F. Wood who is stepping down after 13 years as leader. 1/3

My choice to do that. Each minute of exposure increases risk; it’s not all or nothing. I go out & travel, a lot. Attended a meeting, at CDC, last week. Vaccination status was confirmed. Symptoms were checked daily. Masks were required when not eating. Yes, we protect ourselves.

Though CDC has aligned COVID guidance to meet where most Americans are, there are some who promote continued restrictions. Are they consistent themselves, always masking indoors, forgoing indoor events/dining, etc? If not, hypocrisy fuels further distrust in public health.

Feeling honored and overjoyed to have been awarded 2nd place at the @GWResShowcase for @GWpublichealth! Fun and humbling to see a lot of hard work recognized (congrats to all!). Many topics, like mine, related to consequences of COVID-19 and related stay at home orders (1/6).

Many thanks to Holly Gill and Jim Lebovic for generously supporting for a new Center on Caribbean and Latin American Health housed in the Milken Institute of Public Health . Their commitment to public health is inspiring and we are honored by their gift!

4/ To quite, “you are enabling all of us to do the work that we want to do while also keeping ourselves, and our families, safe.” Ignoring transmission rates & leaving masking to individual choice allows the virus to continue to evolve new variants, and puts many at risk.

2/ Received today a note from a colleague who is asplenic and taking the immuno-suppressant stelara (for crohn's), & deeply appreciative that we are keeping community members safe and our classrooms open. (They note, last Tuesday, just one of their 15 students was masked!)

/1 We do this in the spirit of precaution .. in the context of lots of disruption created by COVID isolations…. With finals around the corner. We also need to be concerned about our colleagues, many who are immunocompromised — for whom it’s not “mild” & vaccines don’t work.

Excellent tweet summarizing new research by and colleagues in -- bit.ly/RWAStudy -- showing that in the absence of verification the antibiotic-free label for beef is not working effectively. We need stronger efforts to save antibiotics.

1/ Research published today shows beef w/ labels such as ‘No Antibiotics Ever’ & ‘Raised without Antibiotics’ (RWA) label claims in beef cattle lack integrity. We break down our research published today in @ScienceMagazine & offer solutions in this thread bit.ly/RWAStudy
