I once gave a paper on a religious topic at a religious history seminar AM: Where do you church? Me: Erm, I don't go to church. AM (flabbergasted): you must be only one of two historians I know who isn't a Christian.
Okay, I'll start: what's the most inane question you've received after a conference presentation? Audience member (AM) : 'Oh, that was INTERESTING, have you read X's work in journal Y?' Me: 'Thank-you, no I haven't, is it recent?' AM: 'Oh, it's not out yet'

Aww, I started thinking about all the weird interactions I've witnessed at conferences... And now I'm sad because I miss conferences.

After a paper on ladies in waiting: "I think you've forgotten that it was a man's world." I don't think people like him (obvs it was a him) have ever given us much chance to do that.
