    One of the most troubling trends in public education: the rising education spending and flat teacher salaries.

    This thread. I had a conversation with staff member who asks students to place their phone in a basket upon entering the office. WHY? The assumptions we make about our students says more about our desire to control their bodies than to support their learning.

    Currently upset by today’s piece about a professor who makes his students turn in cell phones at the beginning of class. (I am not going to link to the piece, because I have no interest in sending a dumpster fire of clicks at the irresponsible publication.)

    My thesis and larger reason for posting this thread: ableism, racism, classism, sexism, and general disdain for students is deeply engrained in the way some faculty talk about students. The devices in the classroom “debate” is rarely actually about laptops or cell phones.

    I’m not arguing that we should “bump” grades or lower our standards, but our mission is to help our students learn and to succeed. Sometimes they need multiple chances to do that. To destroy them like this is immoral.

    An anecdote about one of those students: “He actually missed passing by just a couple of points. He also dropped out of college after that semester, even though the class he took with me was the only one he failed.” The sentence itself points to a problem other than the student.

    Hey! Looks like I’m famous. There is no single best way to teach, but there are ways that avoid ableism.

    Many professors encourage students to put away their devices during lectures - but does a flat out ban on these technologies really help students learn better?
